Winston S. Fu, PhD
US Venture Partners
General Partner

Winston S. Fu joined U.S. Venture Partners as an associate in August 1997, following his selection as a Ewing Marion Kauffman Fellow in Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship. He became a General Partner in 2000. At USVP, Winston focuses on investments that apply semiconductor, photonics and related technologies to a variety of markets. Winston also invests in companies addressing the widening gap between the design and the manufacturing of semiconductors. Prior to joining USVP, Winston served in a variety of technical and marketing roles at Vixel Corporation, (NASDAQ:VIXL was acquired by Emulex:ELX in 2003) where he helped develop vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for the gigabit ethernet and fiber channel markets. As director of product marketing, Winston was responsible for developing new applications for the VCSEL device product line. Prior to Vixel, Winston researched and developed technologies in the areas of semiconductors, lasers, and superconductors at Stanford University, Sandia National Laboratory, and MIT, resulting in numerous technical publications. Winston serves on the Boards of Brion Technologies, CiraNova, Clear Shape Technologies, E-Z-CAD, Princeton Lightwave, T-Networks and Teknovus. From 1999 to 2004, Winston served on the Board of New Focus (NASDAQ: NUFO), a photonics tools and telecom components company which was acquired by Bookham (BKHM) in 2004. Winston holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from MIT, a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, where he was an Austin Scholar.

 

Jim Hogan

Jim has worked in the semiconductor industry for over three decades. His experience includes time as a senior executive in electronic design automation, semiconductor intellectual property, semiconductor equipment, and fabrication companies.

Immediately prior to joining Telos Venture Partners in 2004, Jim was Senior Vice President of Business Development of Artisan Components. Previously, Jim was Senior Vice President of Business Development and the senior member of the Office of Chief Technologist at Cadence Design Systems. Jim was a Cadence Executive Fellow and held several positions at Cadence including President of Cadence Japan, Corporate Vice President of Marketing, and Corporate Vice President for Field Operations. He was also Chief Operating Officer of Smart Machines, Inc., a semiconductor equipment automation company.

Jim also worked for National Semiconductor for 10 years and for Philips. At both companies, he established device physics laboratories globally.

Jim's interest in process and design automation for integrated circuits grew from his experiences between 1972 and 1982 at his family's business, which developed semiconductor-packaging equipment.

Jim holds a B.A degree in mathematics, a B.S. degree in computer science and an M.B.A all from San Jose State University. He serves on the Board of Advisors at San Jose State's School of Engineering.

 

Professor Thomas Kailath

Professor Kailath has been instrumentally involved in the electronics industry for more than forty years.

Professor Kailath has co-founded several high-technology companies, three of which are now public: Integrated Systems, Inc., which was founded in 1980 and merged with WindRiver Systems in 1999, Numerical Technologies, Inc., founded in 1995 acquired by Synopsys, Inc. in 2003, and Excess Bandwidth Corporation, founded in 1998, acquired by Virata Corporation in 2000, which itself merged with Globespan in 2001.

Professor Kailath's research has spanned a large number of disciplines, emphasizing information theory and communications in the sixties, linear systems, estimation and control in the seventies, VLSI design and sensor array signal processing in the eighties, and applications to semiconductor manufacturing and digital communications in the nineties. He has authored,edited and coauthored several books. In the course of his research and teaching, Professor Kailath has mentored over a hundred doctoral and postdoctoral students, authored or co-authored over 300 journal papers, and received numerous awards and recognitions. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Third World Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Spanish Academy of Engineering.

Thomas Kailath received a B.E. (Telecom) degree from the College of Engineering, Pune, India, and S.M. and Sc,D, degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has also received honorary degrees from Linkoping University(Sweden), Strathclyde University (Scotland), the University of Carlos III, Madrid (Spain), and the University of Bordeaux (France).

Katherine Jen
Managing Partner, AsiaTech Management

A seasoned investment executive with over 20 years of experience, Katherine founded AsiaTech in 1997. She has substantial experience in general business finance, deal structuring, and venture capital funding. Katherine was a pioneer in the Taiwan venture business. She played a key role in setting up the first six venture funds in Taiwan and also helped start the successful semiconductor industry there. Katherine was the Director and Deputy Executive Secretary of the Development Fund of the Taiwanese government for 7 years.

Since the inception of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's leading semiconductor foundry, Katherine had been heavily involved with the company's strategic decisions and became very instrumental in its infant stage. She then served as a member of Board of Director of TSMC in the late 1980s. Katherine also worked closely with major banks in Taiwan and served as a board member of the International Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). With her extensive business experience and strong working relationships with prominent business leaders, Katherine is well positioned to help start-up companies achieve their growth objectives.

Currently Katherine sits on the board of NetScreen Technologies, Inc. and a number of private companies. Katherine received her LLB from National Taiwan University.
